The Lord mayor of Newcastle has resigned

The Lord mayor of Newcastle on the NSW Central Coast has resigned, following revelations at the corruption watchdog last week.

Jeff McCloy sent an official letter of resignation to Newcastle council general manager Ken Gouldthorp yesterday.

It comes after it was revealed at the Independent Commission Against Corruption last week that McCloy funded the political campaigns of Newcastle MP Tim Owen and Charlestown MP Andrew Cornwell.

McCloy, who is a developer, gave each candidate $10,000 ahead of the last election.
