Terrorist threat to Westerners in Benghazi

Australians are being urged to leave the Libyan city of Benghazi immediately, following reports of a specific and imminent threat to westerners in the city.

It comes after Britain, Germany, and the Netherlands have issued similar warnings to their nationals in Benghazi, although no details about the threat have been revealed.

The office of Foreign Minister Bob Carr says two Australian are registered as being in Benghazi, and Australian embassy staff in Cairo have been attmepting to contact them this morning.

The Libyan government says it has no knowledge of any such terrorist threat, and says it very surprised by the western reaction.
