Russia under pressure not to assist Syria

The US says Russia should not supply missiles to the Syrian government.

The current arms embargo on Syria expires on Saturday and has not been renewed, due to disagreements between EU states.

But Russia says it will assist the Syrian government with missiles, in order to discourage any other nations involvement in the ongoing civil war, as there are fears Britain and France will arm rebels.

U.S. Department of State Deputy Spokesperson Patrick Ventrell says the US has told Russia, a political solution is the only answer to stopping the conflict in the country.

Both Britain and France say they have no intention of arming rebels in Syria at the moment.
