Reports Barack Obama knew about NSA tapping of Angela Merkel's phone

The United States-Germany phone tapping scandal has taken another turn, with media reports claiming President Barack Obama knew about the National Security Agency tapping the phone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as early as 2010.

Germany received information last week that American spies has bugged Ms Merkel’s mobile phone, but President Obama denied any knowledge of the operation.

A German newspaper has cited a US intelligence source, saying NSA Chief Keith Alexander briefed the President on the operation against Ms Merkel in 2010, and the the tapping had been occurring as early as 2002.

But an NSA spokesperson has denied Mr Obama has any knowledge of what was going on.
