Opposition releases discussion paper into foreign investment

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has announced that under a coalition government, state-owned foreign investors may need to seek federal government approval for purchases, especially in regards to investment in Agriculture.

The proposal has been included in a discussion paper released by Mr Abbott and Nationals leader Warren Truss this morning.

The coalition has decided to release the report as a discussion paper rather than a policy document, and is welcoming community submissions up to October 31.

Mr Abbott says it’s in the national interests of the nation, and therefore public and business consultation is required.

He says Australians deserve to have the confidence that any foreign government investment is in the best interest of Australians.
