Murray Darling Basin plan made into law

Murray Darling Basin plan made into law

Shadow Minister for the Murray Darling Basin Plan, Simon Birmingham says the Coalition will consider the Federal government’s Plan in full, before making any decisions on policy.

It comes as the plan was made into law by Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke today, which aims to return 2,750 gigalitres of surface water a year to the environment.

But the Greens have announced they will move to disallow the plan in Federal Parliament.

Greens Senator Sarah Hansen-Young says it is a win for irrigators, but no one else.

Senator Birmingham says the Coalition will not change their standing on the issue, but they won’t follow the Greens either.

Meanwhile the Australian Conservation Foundation says the government’s Murray Darling Basin Plan will not benefit the Basin’s ecosystem.

Healthy Rivers Campaigner with the Foundation, Johnathan La Nauze says the higher catchment areas have compromised the integrity of the plan.
