Manus Island breakout: reports

The Department of Immigration has confirmed there has been a disturbance at the Manus Island detention centre.

The confirmation of an incident comes as the Australian-based Refugee Action Coalition has released a statement, saying protests at the Papua New Guinea centre escalated earlier yesterday and a perimeter fence has been breached.

There are 1300 asylum seekers in the Australian detention centre, but authorities have not confirmed how many were involved in the breakout.

There are also reports some asylum seekers have been injured in altercations with security guards.
