Liberal MP calls on drug tests for welfare recipients and politicians

Queensland Liberal National MP George Christensen has stated Australians who are receiving tax-payer funded benefits, along with politicians, should be forced to prove they are not using the money to fuel their drug habit.

The MP’s comments come after Mr Abbott has ruled out following the lead of New Zealand on the issue.

Mr Christensen says if mine workers in his electorate are forced to undergo drug testing it’s only fair welfare recipients should as well, and further added he wouldn’t have an issue being drug tested himself.

“There is the ethical and moral issue of whether or not taxpayer dollars should be going into funding people’s drug habits and this drug testing for the dole suggestion would actually weed these people out of the system,” he said.
