Kerry has "big heels to fill"

New US Secretary of State John Kerry has admitted on his first day on the job he has big heels to fill.

Kerry is the first man to take on the job in 8 years following Condoleezza Rice and Hilary Clinton.

The former Senator is likely to spend much of his first week reaching out to foreign leaders.

Over the weekend he spoke to Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abass, as well as the foreign ministers of Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Canada and Mexico.

He has also promised to address the issues the Obama administration faces, following the death of the US Ambassador and 3 others in Benghazi last year, saying he will not let their deaths be in vain.
