Julia Gillard makes bid for UN Security Council seat

Prime MinisterĀ Julia GillardĀ has addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York this morning, to lobby for Australia to be given a seat on the UN Security Council for the 2013-14 term.

She’s emphasised Australia’s close bond with the UN, saying they share the same ideals

She’s outlined the amount of humanitarian aid Australia has donated to developing countries over the past 70 years, and says it has played a partnering role in rebuilding countries after conflict.

Ms Gillard says Australia is committed to imrroving education and gender equality world wide, as well as combating diseases like malaria and HIV, and tacklign climate change.

Australia is up against frontrunner’s Finland and Luxembourg for one of the temporary seats, with a vote to be held in October.
