Government to re-introduce carbon tax repeal bill next week

The Federal Government says it will spend today working on amendments to the its legislation for repealing the carbon tax, so it can be pushed through parliament next week.

The repeal bill was expected to pass the Senate yesterday, but was voted down by Palmer United Party Senators at the last minute, after its party’s amendments could not be adopted.

Leader of the PUP, Clive Palmer, wants an amendment which states, if savings from the abolition of the tax are not passed on by companies to consumers by July 1 next year, companies will have to pay a penalty of 250 per cent of its savings  to the Commonwealth.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt says the government is happy to support the amendments , but the nature of the amendments mean they must first be approved by the House of Representatives, before going to the Senate.

The says the government will aim to have the new, amended legislation before the lower house on Monday.

But the Federal Opposition has questioned why the government did not support the amendments immediately, if they ensure savings will be passed on the Australian households.
