Cosgrove sworn in as GG

Retired Defence Force Chief Peter Cosgrove has been sworn in as Australia’s 26th Governor General.

The official swearing-in ceremony took place in the federal upper house chamber in Canberra this morning, after a general salute from a military guard of honour outside Parliament House.

General Cosgrove replaces Dame Quentin Bryce, who has maintained the role for the last 5 and a half years.

General Cosgrove will also become a Knight, after the honour was re-instated in Australia by Prime Minister Tony Abbott, earlier this week.
