Body found decomposed near Gold Coast river

Queensland police are expected to launch a murder investigation, after a decomposed body was found near a river on the Gold Coast.

The body was discovered by someone fishing in the river yesterday afternoon, near the Pimpama River Bridge.

Detectives say as the body is somewhat decomposed, they have not yet been able to identify whether the body is male or female.

Superintendent David Hutchinson says it is too early to tell whether police are dealing with a murder, suicide or an accident.

“We are unable to say at this point in time even what the gender is, the body has slightly decomposed. We are treating it as suspicious obviously and we hope to find out more about the deceased,” Superintendent Hutchinson said.

“The area around the body is being examined [and] we have the water police assisting us as well.”

He says a post-mortem examination will be carried out on the body to identify the gender and cause of death.

A major crime scene has been established while officers comb the area for clues.
