Asylum seekers threaten sailors to take them to Christmas Island

The Federal Opposition is calling on police to launch a criminal investigation, into whether a boatload of asylum seekers has physically threatened sailors to take them to Christmas Island.

A merchant vessel was sent to the aid of an asylum seeker boat off the coast of Indonesia on Monday.

After picking up the passengers it continued to head to Its destination in Singapore.

It’s reported the asylum seekers then became aggressive and threatened the sailors – ¬†they then turned the boat around and took them to Christmas Island.

Opposition Immigration Spokesperson Scott Morrison says it sends the wrong message to people smugglers, and police need to launch an investigation.

He says the government has created the type of environment where asylum seekers are now turning the boats around themselves.
