Man arrested in terrorism raids in Melbourne

A 23 year old man is expected to face court in Melbourne today, after being arrested on terrorism related offences.

Victoria Police and Australian Federal Police conducted a number of raids across they city yesterday, beginning at the Al-Furqan Islamic Information Centre in Springvale, which is thought to be part of the political fringe of the city’s Muslim community.

The raids culminated in the arrest of man, and the seizure of computer equipment, weapons, and a USB drive containing violent extremist material.

He’s expected to be charged with collecting or making documents likely to facilitate terrorist acts, but police have assured there is no risk to public safety.
