Bob Carr takes Julia Gillards place at the UN

Foreign Minister Bob Carr has delivered a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, on behalf of Prime Minister Julia Gillard who has fallen ill.

During his address, Senator Carr did not offer any details of her illness, but its now been confirmed shen was suffering from a stomach bug.

He’s delivered the same speech the Prime Minister intended t give to the gathering of US and Asian business leaders, saying Australia’s economic future goes beyond the mining boom at the growth of China.

Ms Gillard had made a brief appearance at an events hostes by US Secrtary of State Hillary Clinton, and is also scheduled to attend an evening reception hosted by President Barack Obama 

She is still expected to address the assembly on Thursday, to lobby world leaders to accept Australia’s bid for a seat on the UN Security Council.
