Have you come down with the flu this Winter?
If you have, you may have noticed the tenacity of the influenza virus this season. The unshakable determination of this year’s cold might feel a little different to the flu’s of days gone by, because as of this week, nearly 2000 individual cases of the common cold have occurred so far in NSW.
A flu strain from last year is making the rounds, meaning 2016’s vaccine is less equipped to deal with the surge of germs.
Symptoms such as a sore throat, runny nose, joint pains, fever, nausea, or a long lasting cough, are seemingly harder to treat this time around.
But it’s just a flu, right?
Well, kind of…
Influenza can be very serious business. In the years leading up to the 1920’s the Spanish flu wiped out 50 million people worldwide, which according to immunologists, could occur again, if we were to lose antibiotics.
According to the Department of Health, “influenza activity at [a] national level is continuing to increase, indicating that the season is underway.”
If you are feeling like a zombie, it has been recommended that you avoid child and aged care facilities, as outbreaks are easily spread between those with lower immune systems
